FARA AUSTRALIA RESEARCH FUNDING
fara Australia supports Friedreich Ataxia research projects in partnership with other Friedreich Ataxia advocacy groups around the world, particularly the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) in the United States.
In selecting the recipients of our funding, we work with the FARA US Scientific Review Committee (SRC).
Our fara Australia Board members meet formally at regular intervals to consider proposals the SRC recommends and assesses these using an explicit Impact Scoring criterion. fara also gives special consideration to local Australian research that meets scoring benchmarks.
All of our funded research projects focus on addressing and advancing these nine strategic Friedreich Ataxia research areas.
Gene and Stem Cell therapy
Cardiac Research
Mechanism or Pathway of Disease
Improving Clinical Outcomes
Drug Discovery
Lead Candidates
Cell and Animal Models
Outcome Measures and Biomarkers

RECENTLY FUNDED RESEARCH
fara co-funded two new Research & Clinical Programs & extended four other grants into their second years in 2024/2025
This investment of funds contributed by our community totalled $248,000 and stretched globally from Stanford University to Harvard Medical School, the Friedreich Ataxia Clinic at Monash Medical Centre, University of Wollongong, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Université Paris-Saclay. We also had ongoing research underway at Indiana University, University of Florida and University Federico II in Naples.
Our thanks and gratitude to every contributor and supporter of fara who have made this investment possible. Your kindness is progressing the search for treatments and one day a cure for Friedreich Ataxia.
